When Multi Tasking Makes Sense

Most of the time, I write about being in the present moment, staying focused and not getting distracted. However, there is a time where multi tasking makes sense.

I call this technique, “As long as I’m______________”.  I can’t remember if the idea came from a professional organizer or comments on an organizing blog.

I remember the individual using an example that sounded like this, “As long as I am going upstairs, I might as well take this item with me and put it where it belongs.”

I have adapted this idea. One of my challenges, gifts, or quirks depending how you look at it, is that I get easily bored and distracted and don’t care for certain chores. As a result of rushing, I may make a mess or burn the rice.

I had a great system in place for preparing dinner when I worked out of the home. After my shower, I would go to the kitchen and put water and rice in the pot, turn on the stove and go brush my teeth. As I finished brushing my teeth, the water had boiled. I lowered the temperature on the stove and got dressed. After I got dressed, I turned off the burner on the stove (only if it is electric) and ate my breakfast and packed my lunch. By the time I left for work, the rice was already for dinner or packing in my lunch.

The results of cooking rice, while working from home, have been burnt rice! I would start the rice and then go answer my emails, or listen to an audio class, or prepare for a client and forget about the rice.

Now, I use this method: As long as I am waiting for the rice to cook, I can empty the dishwasher, or clean the counter, or empty the toaster of crumbs or throw out the trash. It works perfectly! I am not bored waiting, I know when the water has boiled, when to lower the temperature, and when to turn the burner off while the residual heat cooks the rice.

What are your ideas as to how to use the “As long as I am _________________” method?
