Are You Struggling To Reach Your Goals?

Sometimes when we set a goal we find that we cannot achieve that goal. As adults, we often set goals that are complex and consist of multiple goals. The goal of getting a new job for example, consists of many sub goals. Do you have the necessary skills and behaviors or mindset to reach that goal?If you have not reached your goal, it may be that you have gaps. “The question is how wide is the gap between your current reality and the life of your dreams?” Marquita (Marty) Herald www.inspiredgiftgiving.com

Children focus on their immediate present situation. If they are playing with blocks, their goal is to stack one block on top of another. Once they are able to stack blocks into a tower that does not fall over, they will move on to other creations.

Imagine if the teacher sat a toddler down in front of the blocks and said, “I want you to build a castle that is 16 inches long, 12 inches high and 14 inches wide with 3 windows, and 2 doors. And oh the ground is uneven, but you can’t dig up the soil.” This task would be incomprehensible to the child and contains multiple variables.

Imagine the self talk that would go on in the mind of the child. “I don’t know where to begin. What are inches, soil, uneven?” “I feel confused.” As they set to work on the task they might feel defeated. “I am not good enough.”

This scenario may seem farfetched, but in the everyday adult world, it is common. An example from my own life might help. When I was in college, I was enrolled in the education program and all science classes that I had to take were labeled basic science 101, 102, and 103. These were science classes that were for “non-science” majors.

The idea of these courses was to give basics of a different branch of science in each one. My problem came in the class – Introduction to physics. There was a lot of theory about atoms and their parts and how they acted. There were laws of motion for objects and lots of mathematical formulas. I could not solve the word problems.

I was sent to a lab where student instructors were helping out. The instructor reviewed the laws and then passed out a sheet of problems to solve. I was stumped. The instructor saw that I was struggling. He said, “What law is this problem talking about?” I knew which law to apply for all the problems. “Then what is the problem?” He asked.

“I don’t know what these symbols mean or what order to work in.” I had never had algebra in high school. He quickly explained what the symbols meant and which order to work. And so, metaphorically speaking, the castle was built!

How wonderful to have someone ask what the problem appeared to be, find the missing gap and steps to solve the problem.

As adults, living in an ever changing world, we may encounter situations in which we have gaps; gaps in knowledge or mind set. Do you have a problem that you have been trying to solve or a goal that you cannot reach?
