What’s Your Number?

As often happens when I am working on something, I get requests for help about the same issue or tool. In February, I was fortunate to do several numerology consults.

What is numerology? Numerology is the study of numbers and their meanings. Numerology is a metaphysical science in that numbers have certain characteristics and meaning that influence your life and events. Numerologists believe that the name you were given at birth and the day, month and year you were born influence who you are and what your purpose is this lifetime.

What is the history of numerology? Numerology goes back thousands of years. Pythagoras, the Greek mathematician who lived from 569-470 B.C., is said by many to be the originator of much of what we call numerology today. For more information check out www.aboutnumerology.com

How is a numerology chart calculated? An individual numerology chart uses a person’s full name at birth and date of birth. Numbers are assigned to each letter of the name and calculated. After the chart is completed, it is interpreted.

What can my personal information tell me? Similar to an astrology chart, a numerology chart can tell you about your life path or purpose, your strengths and weaknesses, even timing of key events in your life.

Here’s how to calculate your birth path:
*(from The Numerology Kit by Carol Adrienne)

The birthpath is the sum of all your birth date numbers. Add all the numbers and reduce to a single digit.

Carl Gustav Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist, whose birthday was July 26, 1875

Dr. Jung had a Nine Birthpath, signifying wisdom, maturity, compassion and healing. It was derived from the 7 (July), which denotes and inventive, questing nature; the 8 (from the 26th) which shows his natural authority and ability to understand human nature; and the 3 (from 1875) which gave him an exceptional ability to verbalize and express his thoughts in writing.

To calculate your destiny number, always use your full name as written on your birth certificate.

Each letter of the alphabet is assigned a number shown by the chart (most commonly used ) below:

An example of a destiny calculation, again comes from Carol Adrienne.

Shirley MacLaine Beaty

Shirley MacLaine Beaty’s destiny number is Nine, the number of multi-talents, with an emphasis on dramatic arts, and a gift for teaching life’s higher principles. She will have access to a broad range of experiences, including travel to foreign countries. She has an interest in spiritual search which is characteristic of the Nine.

Carol Adrienne’s book is a workbook designed to teach you how to learn numerology. It is definitely not a book for a beginner. There are many, many aspects to a chart, each with its own calculations. It is important to know how to interpret the whole chart.

The best book for metaphysical students interested in using numerology to understand spiritual laws is: The Life You Were Born to Live – A Guide To Finding Your Life Purpose by Dan Millman (also author of Way of the Peaceful Warrior).

In his book, Dan Millman presents the Life-Purpose System, a modern method based on ancient wisdom. He discusses the thirty seven paths of life, derived from your date of birth. He states: “Many systems of personality typing exist in both psychological and spiritual traditions. While self analysis can generate the impulse to change, the Life-Purpose System provides specific laws keyed to each life path to help us transform our health, our relationships, our work and every other facet of our lives.”

He discusses the spiritual laws and specific challenges for each life path along with useful questions and recommendations to help you make the most of your life. It is a very clear and focused book that you can return to again and again on your journey.
